Broken Rules is an award winning boutique game development studio located in the heart of Vienna, Austria, in the Museumsquartier.

Our mission is to create innovative titles that maintain broad accessibility.

Our games focus on originality, simplicity, refined game mechanics and rich interactivity.

We regard video games as important cultural achievements and seek to make every game a new and meaningful experience that lingers in your mind long after you've powered down your computer.

Broken Rules is the founder and co-operator of a public game exhibition space called zamSpielen.

Location

Broken Rules is located in the heart of Vienna in the MuseumsQuarier and is a proud part of Q21.

The Team

FELIX BOHATSCH

Felix { t } is our CEO and a level 80 game design wizard. He's the only team member who has a master title in Game Design. He is mostly responsible for game design and managing the studio, keeps the vision of the company and embodies our independent spirit the most.

JAN HACKL

A coder and system designer at heart, Jan { t | w } acted as the Audio Director for Chasing Aurora and Secrets of Raetikon. He keeps our server infrastructure in check while having the most surprising ideas when it comes to game design.

MARTIN PICHLMAIR

Martin { t } handled business development and the marketing side of Broken Rules up until 2015, as well as being the lead architect of our in-house game editor GinkEd. He is doctor of computer sciences and has a past in new media arts. Currently he is Head of the Games Programme at ITU Copenhagen.

PETER VORLAUFER

Peter is the technical lead and CFO. He loves physics and raw playfulness - in games and in sports. Peter is a ++coder and the king of templates. He's a combines the skills of a builder and an architect of destruction in one person.

CLEMENS SCOTT

Clemens { t | w } is Broken Rules' creative director and lead artist. After creating the distinct visuals for Chasing Aurora and Secrets of Raetikon, he has been working with various developers around the globe on titles such as Flywrench, Darknet and 20XX.
He is responsible for the art and creative direction of Old Man's Journey.

Josef Who

Josef { t } has been accompanying Broken Rules since the studio's founding times. He worked as a level designer on And Yet It Moves and Chasing Aurora, acts as the main organiser & curator for zamSpielen and helps out at the local game culture hub Subotron. He is one of the co-creators of CHESTO - At the Checkout. He currently works as a producer and has the oversight of bringing our games to new platforms.

Alumni

Peter Houska

Peter, usually referred to as Husky, was our supporting tech engineer. He ported Chasing Aurora to the Wii U and is an all-around top-notch whizz kid when it gets down and dirty with any kind of low level code. He helped bring No Man's Sky to the PS4 and is currently working with our fellow colleagues at Mi'Pu'Mi.

Andrea Schmoll

Andy {t} is a game designer by trade and lead working with us during the development of Chasing Aurora, leading the user tests as well as acting as handling all of our social channels. Her adventures took her from Arkane Studios to Ubisoft Toronto, where she currently works as a systems designer.

Christoph Binder

Christoph {t} worked with Felix, Peter and Jan on And Yet It Moves from 2006 until it's release in 2009. He created all of the audio for the game and was involved in game and level design.

Privacy Policy

Inspired by the GDPR we keep stored data at a bare minimum.

That means:

  • We don't analyse your usage of our websites or games
  • We don't store cookies
  • We don't use any social media plugins
  • We anonymise our server logs
  • We don't run any ads, profile you or do any other nonsense like that.

In short:

Your data is yours.


What we do Collect

  • Our website is hosted at HostEurope and runs a standard server log to prevent hacks and other malicious activity. This data is anonymised and will be deleted after a maximum of two months.
  • If you sign up to our newsletter we store your email adress and, if provided by you, your name using Mailchimp. We will only use this data for sending you occasional emails when we have new products to announce. Of course you can always unsubscribe and execute your data rights using their tools.

Your rights

Right to access data, right to rectification and completion of incomplete personal data, right to erasure, right to restriction of processing, right of objection, right to data portability, right to withdraw consent at any time.

Content usage guidelines

Broken Rules, hereafter referred to as “the publisher”, grants the following rights to the community:

Using the guidelines below, the publisher grants permission for users to make videos (walkthroughs, Let's Play, reviews, etc.) with the publisher’s game content, images, audio, music, and/or cutscenes and publish to YouTube, twitch.TV, or similar digital services.

Guidelines

  • Do not take assets from our games (e.g. voice, music, items) and distribute them separately
  • Do not charge or restrict users from access to your videos
  • Do not sell or license your videos to others for payment of any kind
  • Absolutely no racist, sexist or homophobic content

Failure to abide by these content guidelines may result in the publisher having the video removed.

The publisher will, at its sole discretion, determine if a video does not comply with these content guidelines.


Monetization

You are free to monetize videos via the partner programs with YouTube, Twitch.tv, Justin.tv, Blip.tv, Ustream.tv, or similar services whereby a website may pay you for views of a video if you are accepted into their partner program.


Ownership

The publisher retains all ownership and rights of its produced content, and may terminate or change the terms of this agreement at its sole discretion.
